Barcelona’s big Festival has already started. Street stages are being set on the main squares and streets of the city, specially in the Center and Raval and Gothic Quarter. From Thursday to Sunday, the city expects to receive more than 2 million visitors who will participate in hundreds of cultural and artistic activities. Mercè Festival is a festival of Arts, Music, Tradition and Fire that goes from 11 in the morning to 4 at night for 4 days. In this post, we will try to sum up the program diving the activities by time of the day. Hope it is useful!
Morning time is time for Tradition. In the Old Town, around Plaça Sant Jaume (Town Hall) and La Rambla, there will take place the traditional parades of folk culture with all the typical charatcters and troupes present in all Catalan Festivities: Castellers (Human Towers), Giants, Sardana dances and even the Trabucaires (a group of armed men that shot to the sky to wake up the neighbors). You can also use the morning time to visit Museums and Exhibitions, as they will be free on the 24th.
Afternoons and evenings are the time to enjoy street theater and performances. In Ciutadella Park, various installations will be set as well as stages where dance, circus, and theater shows will be performed. Ciutadella Park can also be a good place to grab something to eat as there will be many food trucks cooking and serving all kind of food.
When the sun goes down, light, color and fire get the main roles of the feast. Every 30 minutes, a mapping will be screened on the facade of the Town Hall. It’s a story made up of images, colors and music, integrated on the size and form of the building. On Sunday evening, the devils will take the streets in the Correfoc, a fire parade where people melts in with the devils and runs with them under the fire from the firecrackers.
Nights are taken by the music. More than 20 stages scattered around the city will stage all kind of musical concerts. From the most popular rock and pop bands, national and international, to more alternative, underground and local projects. The main stages will be in Avinguda Maria Cristina, Fàbrica Estrella Damm, Bogatell Beach and Forum and the smaller ones are scattered in Raval District and the Port.
