March is Runner’s Month in Barcelona. It is true that any month could be runner’s month, considering the increasing number of locals who take to the streets to run and train every day, but March is the month when the star running event takes place: Zurich Marató Barcelona.
After months of disciplined and strict training, thousands of athletes, both professionals and amateurs, finally get to test themselves in the Marathon: 42km of an urban race with a route that goes all over the city running past its main attractions.
Starting from Plaça Espanya and the Magic Fountain, runners will run past Camp Nou, Passeig de Gràcia, Sagrada Familia, the seafront, Plaça Catalunya and Columbus Statue, among other city highlights. But not only the city’s architecture keep marathoners entertained and distracted from their own fatigue, also drummers, musicians, human towers and up to 41 animation groups spread over the course are in charge of cheering runners up and making the event a big city festival. Since the first edition in 1978, the number of participants in Barcelona Marathon increases every year, especially in the last 4 editions, reaching 20.000 runners in 2014.
Year after year, the participation in other popular running competitions in Barcelona also increases significantly, that is that because in the last 10 years more and more people have started practicing running as a regular sport. The runners community gets bigger and bigger and there are some places in Barcelona that, in the evenings, are taken by dozens of people dressed in their leotards and sneakers. If, during your visit to Barcelona, want to join them and make some exercise, these are the main running “street venues” in the city: the seafront (from la Barceloneta to the Forum), Montjuïc, La Ciutadella park, Diagonal Avenue (both at its southern and northern end) and Passeig de les Aigües, a pedestrian trail in Collserola Park with awesome views to the city.
Besides Marathon, the toughest competition, other races take place in the city throughout the year. If you like running, joining one of them could be a different way of getting to know the city. Running side by side in silence with thousands of locals is also a genuine Barcelona experience. Take note of the following events, the most popular running competitions in the city and plan your visit from a runner point of view: Half Marathon (February), Marathon (March), Cursa de Bombers 10km (April-May), Cursa de El Corte Inglés 10km (April-May) Cursa de la Mercè 10km (September) and Cursa dels Nassos (31st December).
