From the 5th to the 8th of May, Barcelona hosts one of the funniest fairs of the year: Barcelona’s Comic International Fair (Saló Internacional del Còmic de Barcelona). 2016 edition is the 34th edition of this annual massive meeting that gathers together comic fans, authors and publishers. More than 100.000 visitors are expected.
Spain, and Barcelona in particular, is home of many comic writers and artists who are renowned internationally. This, together with the significant number of comic schools and readers and fans in town has made of this Fair one of the most important Comic Meetings in Europe. The event is held in Fira de Barcelona in Montjuïc, in front of the Magic Fountain, filling a space of 45.000 square meters with comic exhibitors, themed exhibitions and merchandising on comic heroes.
This year’s highlight is the exhibition Vinyetes sobre rodes (Comic strips on wheels), dedicated to the presence of cars, motorbikes and bicycles on the comic strips, featuring more than 200 originals from all over the world. Some of this vehicles will be also exhibited for real. As a special feature, the assistants to the Fair will have the opportunity to see first hand a replica of the Moon Tug, the hybrid spaceship that will be featured in the sequel of the legendary film Independence Day.
Another important exhibition is the one honoring Ibáñez, a local author, father of the most popular Spanish comic series: Mortadelo y Filemón (Mort and Phil). Ibáñez has been drawing the adventures of this peculiar couple of agents of this special Secret Service Agency and they have been read by all generations sice the 1960’s. Ibáñez is also author of other iconic characters of the comic strips in Spain and going over his works in this exhibition will give the visitor a sense of the typical Spanish humor.
Finally, other exhibitions that will be worth to pay a visit to will be the ones dedicated to women superheroes, to Tintin and his multilingualism, social and political graphic novels and a display of works that have won different contests throughout the year.
The four days of the Fair will be four intense days full of activities: there will be conferences by authors and publishers, comic drawing workshops and a number of authors from all over the world are invited to the event and will be signing books for their fans. This is a must-go event for any comic fan in Barcelona.
The fair will be open from Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th from 10h to 21h.
