Tapas in Barcelona: 4 Restaurants Where Locals Go

As promised in our last post A Brief Guide to Tapas, we are about to reveal a secret that shouldn’t be spread: 4 popular restaurants in Barcelona where locals go for Tapas. Away from the City Center, where dozens of Tapas Bars have been growing like mushrooms to absorb the massive tourism, locals have their favorite Tapas Restaurants in their districts, old-age places, authentic and real restaurants that have achieved a established local clientele thanks to the quality of their tapas.

Passeig de Fabra i Puig, 296

In Horta district, a popular area of Barcelona of working class population, you’ll find busy restaurant La Esquinica. Famous for the quality of their food, the classic and typical Tapas are served there generously in large plates. It’s the perfect combination of quantity and quality in rabas, chocos, chorizo, jamón, bravas, etc… Busy every day of the week, it has the atmosphere of a true Tapas Restaurant where people from the neighborhood go to have a good time. Its fame goes beyond the neighbors and most locals know it and, even it might not be close from one’s area, most people have been there at least once. Authenticity and abundant food.

Carrer de Sant Lluís, 9

In Gràcia District, one of the most popular areas of bars and restaurants in Barcelona frequented by locals and foreigners living in the city, you’ll find many fine restaurants where you can eat at a reasonable price. Among the Tapas Bar, one of the most popular among locals is Pollería Fontana. Pollería means Chicken House, but don’t be mislead by the name, they offer a variety of tapas and platillos based on the traditional cuisine and Grandmother’s recipes. Cozy atmosphere and home-style cooking.

Carrer Major de Sarrià, 49

If by any chance you happen to visit Sarrià area, you’ll discover some old streets that used to be an old independent village. It’s a peaceful and tranquil area not too far from Camp Nou and the Romanesque Monastery of Pedralbes. Well, in Sarrià’s main street there is Bar Tomás, best-known for having the best Patatas Bravas Barcelona. They serve them individually and their Bravas are truly exceptional: well-cooked potatoes and their spicy sauce with a secret recipe. Frequented by locals from the area, but also from other neighborhoods, because everyone has sometime heard about the great Bravas from Tomás. An obligatory stop on your way if you are in Sarrià.

Carrer de Santaló, 21

This is not a popular Tapas restaurant in the city but in Restaurant Bambarol where they serve delicious signature Tapas at a very good price. It is located next to Francesc Macià square, in a let’s say “poshy” area of the city but we highlight this restaurant for the excellent quality of their tapas. The atmosphere is not a Tapas Bar restaurant atmosphere but the philosophy of their cuisine is that of sharing the plates, so you can taste a little bit of everything. It is well-known for serving the best Ensaladilla Rusa in Barcelona. A little jewel still known by just a few.
