Theater, Dance, Music, Circus and other stage arts, Barcelona’s main annual date of Performing Arts takes place in July and it is called Festival Grec. More than 100 local and international productions will be held in more than 30 venues in this summer Festival that offers many open-air shows, and has become a key reference on the European calendar of festivals. This year it is celebrating its 39th edition.
Grec means Greek in Catalan and Teatre Grec is the Greek Theater of Barcelona. The Festival is named after the Theater because it has its origins in this particular theatre in town. The Greek Theater was built as part of the 1929 World Fair, along with the Montjuïc Gardens which are one of the city highlights. The open-air theater resembles an Ancient Greek Theater and has the appropriate acoustics and capacity to stage performances but the fact is that it was not much used until mid 70’s, when the first edition of Festival Grec took place. Nowadays, the Theater is still hardly used, except during the Festival, which brings a great opportunity to watch theater performances as they did in the Ancient Greece. This year, the venue will stage a special theater play about the different visions of Love in Shakespeare’s works performed by many outstanding and popular Catalan actors and actresses, as well as concerts of Diego El Cigala, Joan Manuel Serrat and Yann Tiersen, among others.
Grec Festival is promoted by Barcelona City Council but it also involves many private companies and promoters. The main theaters in the city become venues of the Festival and performances are also held in public libraries and museums. The Festival serves not only to bring to the audience of Barcelona private productions and the most interesting works around the world but also promotes and becomes a producer of local artists and companies.
