The 48th edition of the International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia has just started. From the 9th to the 13th of October, the narrow streets of Sitges will fill with movie goers, filmmakers, journalists from all over the world and even zombies in the most important Film Festival in Catalonia. The Sitges Festival offers around 300 screenings of horror and fantastic films from different countries including world premieres, unique productions and retrospectives in what has become the number one Fantastic Film Festival in the world.
Throughout the years, the Festival has been increasing its number of visitors and screenings as well as its relevance in the film industry, receiving many international movie stars. This year, the Festival will honor the director Oliver Stone and will welcome the visits of the top-level Horror and Fantastic Film directors and producers. For any horror movie lovers, Sitges is definitely the place to be in October.
Screenings start at 8.30am and finish after midnight and there are many other parallel and special activities related to the world of Horror Films. Marathons are among the most popular screenings. Viewers can watch three or more movies, one after another, sometimes not knowing which films are included. This year, there is a special Twin Peaks Marathon: the whole first season of the TV series in one screening!
As any other Festival, there are different competitions and an international and professional jury. As a novelty this year, there is a Section and a special prize for films shot on smartphones. At the end of the Festival, the awards ceremony takes place followed by a Surprise Screening and the Final Marathon.
Probably the most striking, popular, and festive event of the Festival is the Zombie Walk. The Zombie Walk is a parade of zombies walking along the streets of Sitges. Who are these zombies? They are visitors of the Festival who dress like zombies and behave like zombies. The Festival hires a team of professional make up artists who are at the service of anyone who wants to become a zombie for one night. They produce amazing scary make up using the techniques they use for professional films. Once dressed and made up, the zombies walk together in a zombie-like manner along the streets. The walk finishes with a Zombie Party and, as could not be otherwise, a Zombie Movies Marathon. It is a truly a sight to see!
Sitges is only half an hour far from Barcelona easily reached by train. Check out all the information of this amazing event at the Festival Website.
