One of the most beautiful landscapes in Catalonia is, undoubtedly, Costa Brava. A coastal region North of Barcelona with pristine water, rocky beaches surrounded by pine forests and green bushes. During the day, Costa Brava is a place to discover nature and enjoy bathing, sunbathing, kayaking, and at night the villages of the area offer a wide range of restaurants, cafés and beautiful promenades along the shore. In Summer, when the activities in Barcelona lessen, Costa Brava becomes a hub for leisure and cultural events. Live music concerts stand out from all cultural activities with three international music Festivals in three very special venues in Baix Empordà.
In one end of Calella de Palafrugell, a former fishermen village, there is a headland that houses one of the most important Botanical Gardens in the Mediterranean, and serves as the setting of Cap Roig Festival. In the open air and by the sea, a stage is built every summer to host international and national artists of different styles. Barbara Hendricks, Mark Knopfler, Pet Shop Boys, Bryan Adams and Bob Dylan have played there in the last editions and this year, Sting and Ben Harper are heading the bill. From mid July to mid August, this stage houses outstanding musical performances nearly every night in a magical environment. – Festival de Cap Roig
Not far from the coast, Peralada is a small village surrounding a Mediaeval Castle. The Castle and its Gardens are the setting of this Festival that every summer brings to Costa Brava not only exquisite lyric concerts but also ballet, symphonic orchestras and theater events. The main stage is the Gardens Auditorium but other monuments of the Mediaeval site, like the Church and the Cloister, are used as cultural events settings. Lyric concerts by international renowned sopranos and tenors are the highlights of the Festival. This year’s edition, stellar soprano Diana Damrau or tenor Klaus Florian Vogt, will delight the audience with intimate performances of voice and piano. A national production of Shakespeare’s Otello and Verdi’s opera version of the same play will also be on the main stage of Peralada Castle. – Festival Castell de Peralada
This is the oldest and with a longer traditional of the Summer Festivals in Costa Brava. Set in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, a town on the coast, the Festival hosts all kinds of cultural events including concerts, theater plays, stand-up comedy artists, dance, shows for kids,… There are different stages and venues around the town: the port, the church, gardens, an indoor auditorium,… Lyric soprano Ainhoa Arteta and the return on stage of mythic British band Spandau Ballet are the highlights of 2015 edition. – Festival de la Porta Ferrada
